San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS)
2014 Expenses Reasonableness Review

Background

On January 9, 2012, Edison shut down SONGS Unit 2 for scheduled maintenance, followed by the shutdown of SONGS Unit 3 due to a steam generator tube leak on January 31, 2012. Neither SONGS unit ever returned to service.

On April 1, 2015 Edison and SDG&E filed amendments to their January 30 Applications, which were required by the CPUC’s approval of the SONGS Settlement, request:

  • Edison: $213 million (100% share) be found reasonable 
  • SDG&E: $39.4 million be found reasonable

Based on the June 4, 2015 Prehearing Conference, the Public Advocates Office (the Office) anticipates that this proceeding will be deferred until the SONGS Decommissioning Cost Estimate proceeding is resolved.
 

Public Advocates Office Position 

The Office filed a protest to Edison’s and SDG&E’s Applications stating that it intends to review the filing in-depth and evaluate the reasonableness of the request, as well as conduct an audit of the recorded 2014 numbers. The Office will continue its review of the utilities’
request when the CPUC resumes the proceeding.
